Guide to using CSS attribute selectors

I recently encountered a new request on a client website that introduced me to an extremely cool CSS trick. We were working on an e-commerce website that featured hundreds of different products but all were from six specific, well known brands. We observed that it would be very useful to the site’s visitors to be able to easily distinguish between the products offered by the six brands as they browsed the site’s catalog and navigated through pages and pages of choices.

I brainstormed a little and came up with the idea of theming the “Read more” button that people would be clicking on to view a product according to the brand’s colors. After a little research, I found that this was possible by using CSS attribute selectors.

I first discovered a great intro to this CSS trick on (what else) CSS Tricks which is one of my favorite websites. This got me started and I managed to make my vision a reality with just a few of my own additions.

To really make this as simple as possible, I think I’ll begin by breaking down some CSS basics.

basic-css

This diagram will help us break down the various components that we can use when applying our CSS. We’ll work with this basic HTML and give examples for styling based on each part.

A. Styling by the HTML element

a {
color: blue;
}

B. Styling by the “href” attribute

a[href="http://google.com"] {
background-color: red;
}

…or something like this would work too:

a[href*="google"] {
background-color: red;
}

This example states that any links with “google” in the “href” attribute will have a red background. The asterisk indicates that if “google” is found anywhere in the URL, this rule will apply.

You could also style for certain file types. Here is how to use the “href” attribute selector to style links to a PDF file:

a[href$=".pdf"] {
font-family: "Arial" sans-serif;
}

C. Styling by ID

#apple {
font-weight: bold;
}

Any elements with the “apple” ID will have bold text.

D. Styling with classes

.orange {
outline: orange;
}

…or something like this:

.orange.cherry {
text-decoration: underline;
}

The first example sets an orange outline on anything with the “orange” class. The second states that elements with BOTH the “orange” and “cherry” classes will have an underline.

E. Styling by the “title” attribute

a[title~=Google] {
border: 1px dashed green;
}

This rule applies a dashed, green border to links that have “Google” in the title attribute.

F. Styling by the “target” attribute

a[target="_blank"] {
border-radius: 4px;
}

This example sets a border radius on links that open in a new window.

As you can see, there are loads of cool ways that we can apply our custom styling to HTML elements.

Online Advertising – SEM & PPC

Online paid advertising is the one unique form of advertising that accurately identifies and targets customers who raise their hands to say, “I’m interested in what you have to offer.”  Much different than television, radio, magazines and direct mail where we have to wait for the end user to respond. These forms of online advertising effectively round out marketing strategies where online presence is common for the target audience and online advertising firms may help enhance the process.

Banner and skyscraper advertisements, on the whole, are in a sharp decline, but the techniques and tools are changing and improving with time. Paid search, keyword advertising, content marketing and online display advertising are extremely cost effective when used correctly. This is especially true as Search providers begin to offer “Enhanced Campaigns” which effectively bring mobile and retargeting into the mix.

Sounds great, how does it work?Online Advertising with Real Big marketing brings more traffic to your website.

Whether you’re used to Google, Bing or Yahoo, you’ve become familiar with the advertisements that show up around the real results from your search query. This is a common starting point for online advertising called paid search.  Sometimes called Search Engine Marketing, or SEM, it’s only a start.

You’ve seen the ads that follow you around the internet, the thumbnails that show up on the bottom right side of your Facebook and Linkedin pages. This is all paid online advertising. The tools used today extend far beyond results on search pages alone. As part of an online marketing strategy, brands or companies will pay for or bid on keywords and placements of display advertisements that relate to the products or services they provide. The search engines, their display networks and social media sites deliver the right ads to the right people on the web or on their smart phone.

Does the return warrant the spend?

Online advertising is ideal for marketers who want to pay for performance.  You should try it with or without a marketing firm behind you. It’s cost effective to start a campaign. We’ve found that small campaigns grow. As you run your strategy out, you’ll notice that it becomes time consuming.

With multiple campaigns and hundreds, thousands or even millions of keywords being analyzed. Paid search and online advertising can quickly become unruly when you have other work to do. Managing the keyword research, competitive bid auctions, quality scores, retargeting, extensions, demographics, landing pages, and analytics will often grow into a real job of it’s own.

This is a job that must be done because the return warrants the spend. You’ll need a partner to help when you can’t afford not to show up on the first page your client is on.

Choosing Online Advertising Firm

Digital and online agencies will often provide Paid Search or PPC Management services. There seem to be a growing number of them. Some good some bad. Print companies are buying or making ad agencies to keep afloat. TV, Radio, Newspaper and other Media companies are expanding to include the service as well. Advertisements from “Experts” are everywhere including your email.

So how to choose? Finding a reputable company isn’t time consuming. Listen to what each provider is telling you. Where are they? Will they know your market or just plug in stock content and cookie cutter campaigns. Make sure that they are qualified to do the work and not trying to sell you services you don’t need. Remember, cookie cutter solutions get companies in trouble and if the firm has a core competency in another field, they have to feed that machine.

What does your gut tell you? Is the budget appropriate to the results expected? Are you expecting to work with an online advertising firm but being pulled toward a tactic or marketing platform that doesn’t make sense for your clients? Did they check to see if online advertising would provide you with sufficient return? How are their references?

Email Marketing

Why do I need to do e-mail marketing?

Connect with your market!  People need to know about your products and services.  Current and potential clients alike, they need to be kept informed on what you have in stock.  Mail is too expensive for such continuous announcements, and email marketing is now the best direct access method to reach clients.  If you are trying to reach people in any form or fashion, you need to be marketing by email.

Your business needs to build relationships.  A new client needs to know why they should come to you.  Current clients need to know why they should stay with you.  Both are important issues.  Email marketing allows you to keep in touch with your market and build those relationships.  Getting to know clients is just as important as your clients getting to know you.

Why not just send out my own email campaigns?

Your time is extremely valuable.  To be effective, email campaigns require a large time investment to research your topics, plan your message, create the content, and design templates that are appealing to your market.  A well thought out campaign with creative content will be very effective at spreading your message, and to do that takes a lot of time.  Are you able to manage your own email marketing?  Absolutely.  Do we doubt your talents?  Absolutely not!  We just want to help reduce your workload so you can focus on other important tasks that you must accomplish.

Online Reputation Management

What are the benefits of online reputation management?

Every company, including yours, has an online reputation.  Your reputation as a company and business leader is extremely important.  It’s very easy for one negative comment or public image to take hold and put the wrong face on your company.

Is it all about preventing a negative image?  Absolutely not!  Your business has goals, philosophies, things that make you stand out from your competitors and make your products and services trusted in the community.  Online reputation management will build that public image that your company needs.  That public image is directly affected by what people find online.

How does Real Big Marketing take care of online reputation management?

We want to make sure people know you’re company.  It is our priority to ethically build an online presence for you.  Why do we say ethically?  Some companies are in the business of removing all negative comments, posts, websites, mass producing fake profiles and reviews to boost your status.

Real Big Marketing takes a very proactive approach.  Instead of hiding from problems, we face them head on and tackle the real issues. You need happy clients.  You need satisfied clients, customers that feel like their needs and issues addressed and resolved.  We help build that communication between you and your market.

Review sites are some of the places we start.  These will be the most likely places that your image could take a plunge.  We will interact with clients and handle complaints on your behalf.  If there are articles that create a negative image, we will work to get your side of the story heard, and communicate with the author directly.

When you entrust your online reputation management to Real Big Marketing, you can relax and know that you will be taken care of.  We look forward to working with you!

Content Marketing

What is the purpose of Content Marketing?

When trying to reach and convert visitors into clients, content marketing should be a huge consideration.  What you present to the customer on your site, in your news letter, in the company update you mail out each month – content is key!  Informing clients, presenting them with information, but not attempting to blatantly sell your product or service?  Don’t they just need to hear about the product?  No.  Consumers need to get to know you, get to know your company, products, and services.  As that information is absorbed, there conversion rate is likely to be much higher than a product advertisement.

Is Content Marketing effective?

Absolutely!  When you inform and tell people what they need to know, they will place their trust in you.  If they begin to trust your brand, you can create a long term, satisfied customer.  One that will tell their friends!

Banner ads and sales gimmicks have their place, but content marketing is becoming more and more prominent.  Consumers want information.  They want to know what is out there, what is available.  The flashy colors and loud advertisements cannot take the place of solid information.

How do we do it?

As always, here at Real Big Marketing, if you come to us with a need?  We LISTEN.  We get to know you.  The more we get to know your company, your brand, the better we can tell your story.  We tailor the content to the consumers, and we also practice lean content marketing.  We research, hypothesize, implement ideas, and constantly evaluate the results and keep you informed.

Your customers need to hear your unique perspective on how to use products, who has used your services, what were the results?  They need to know WHY to come to you instead of every other company offering the same information.  If you need to be heard, we can make sure you are heard.

We look forward to learning about you and how we can set you apart from the crowd.  Please contact us so we can discuss any content marketing needs you might have.  Talk to you soon!
